About Me
Hi, I’m Laurel Joy.
Laurel Joy is a musician, songwriter, teacher, and music therapy intern based in CT & NYC.
Laurel has been playing piano for 17 years, with her roots in jazz, blues, rock, and styles of pop. She has been playing gigs and solo piano events for 10+ years, with experience in songwriting, teaching beginners of all ages, and home recording. She was originally classically trained, then pivoted to jazz instruction through the Litchfield Jazz Camp and WMU jazz instructors. She studies music therapy and jazz piano, and will be graduating with a B.S. in music therapy next fall.
She began her journey at a young age, with a deep fascination for piano and creation. It started with a passion and a dream, which lead her to play for and with many people, including jazz combos, jazz bands, churches, girl bands, hip-hop artists, indie artists, Long Wharf Theatre, and rock bands.
She has been a collaborative pianist with many regional artists of the likes of, PROLIFIC, BODHI, Sb Khi, Floyd Zion, Modern Refuge, Ambrose, Purple Fusion, and SAVII. Her piano collaborations have led her to travel across the country to notable CMA fest, Mile of Music Fest, and Seeing Sounds fest, and Hartford Bonanza. She is currently featured on singles “Wave empire” and “Eve of Delights”, as well as her own projects under “Laurel Joy”, available via Spotify, Youtube, and composition portfolios. She currently plays in her Trio original music as well as jazz tunes, with a style often described like Tori Amos, Kate Bush, and Fiona Apple. With over 100 originals works, she is an avid songwriter.
Songwriting is a huge part of her work as an artist, but also as a teacher. She always encourages students to practice writing and listening. “Music is not just something we play off a piece of paper, it is a form of self-expression, and a chance to create something beautiful”. As a music therapy intern, she has worked with many people on using music as a tool for health. She has worked with Nursing homes, Schools for children with IDDs, Transition Academies, and Bereavement camps to offer music therapy support. She is avid in introducing adults with Autism and other neurological disabilities to the joy of music making. She currently runs workshops for adults in this field. Laurel offers lessons, studio music, music recreation, event piano, collaborations, and songwriting services via bookings.
